What is the difference between literature and journalism? Oh! Journalism is unreadable, and literature is not read.
There is much to be said in favour of modern journalism. By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community.
Not everybody realizes that a really good journalists accomplishment requires at least as much ‘genius’ as any scholarly accomplishment.[Daß eine wirklich gute journalistische Leistung mindestens so viel “Geist” beansprucht wie irgendeine Gelehrtenleistung.]
In journalism just one fact that is false prejudices the entire work. In contrast, in fiction one single fact that is true gives legitimacy to the entire work. That’s the only difference, and it lies in the commitment of the writer. A novelist can do anything he wants so long as he makes people believe in it.
