[during the interview]What would you say if a guy walked in for an interview without a shirt on, and I hired him? What would you say?[Martin Frohm]He must’ve had on some really nice pants.[Chris Gardner]
This part of my life, this little part, is called “happyness.”
I don’t understand.[Christopher]You don’t understand what?[Chris Gardner]Are we going to the game?[Christopher]I said possibly we’re going to the game. You know what “possibly” means?[Chris Gardner]Like probably.[Christopher]No, “probably” means there’s a good chance that we’re going. “Possibly” means we might, we might not. What does “probably” mean?[Chris Gardner]It means we have a good chance.[Christopher]And what does “possibly” mean?[Chris Gardner]I know what it means.[Christopher]What does it mean?[Chris Gardner]It means that we’re not going to the game.[Christopher]
Let me ask you something. Are you happy?[Chris Gardner]Yeah.[Christopher]All right. Because I’m happy. And if you’re happy and I’m happy, then that’s a good thing, right?[Chris Gardner]
Knock knock.[Christopher]Who’s there?[Chris Gardner]Nobody.[Christopher]Nobody who?[Chris Gardner][Christopher doesn’t respond]Nobody who?[Chris Gardner][Christopher still doesn’t respond]Now, that’s funny. I like that one.[Chris Gardner][last lines]
It was simple. X number of calls equals X number of prospects. X number of prospects equals X number of customers. X number of customers equals X number of dollars in the company’s pocket.[narrating]
It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence, and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking. How did he know to put the “pursuit” part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue. And maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what. How did he know that?[narrating, after learning Linda is taking Christopher away from him]
I’m the type of person, if you ask me a question, and I don’t know the answer, I’m gonna tell you that I don’t know. But I bet you what. I know how to find the answer, and I will find the answer.[to Frohm]
Watch now on:
I met my father for the first time when I was 28 years old. And I made up my mind as a young kid that when I had children, my children were gonna know who their father was.[narrating]
Don’t ever let somebody tell you, you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.[to Christopher]
