If evidence is collected, if confessions are made, if a verdict of guilty is entered in a court of law, then its happening becomes as the rocks and rivers, and to argue that it didn’t happen is to argue with reality itself.
Human beings, you see, have no inherent value other than the money they earn. Cats have value, for example, because they provide pleasure to the humans. But a deadbeat on welfare? Well, they have negative value.
Eggs are done. Pancakes are warmin’ in the oven. You can fight me on “Are we gonna stay the night?” Or you and the kid can grab a plate and see why they call me “The Breakfast King of Loyola.”
Being grown’s got a price. Kid gets slapped when he’s bad. When you’re grown, you get the fist. Or the knife.
And isn’t that a minor miracle? The state of the world today and the level of conflict and misunderstanding, that two men could stand on a lonely road in winter and talk calmly and rationally, while all around them, people are losing their mind.
After WWII, we went six years without a murder here. Six years. And these days, well… Sometimes wonder if you boys didn’t bring that war home with ya.
