Some mystery should be left in the revelation of character in a play, just as a great deal of mystery is always left in the revelation of character in life, even in one’s own character to himself.
Life is an unanswered question, but let’s still believe in the dignity and importance of the question.
If I am no longer disturbed myself, I will deal less with disturbed people and with violent material. I don’t regret having concerned myself with such people, because I think most of us are disturbed.
I’m a poet. And then I put the poetry in the drama. I put it in short stories, and I put it in the plays. Poetry’s poetry. It doesn’t have to be called a poem, you know.
I have found it easier to identify with the characters who verge upon hysteria, who were frightened of life, who were desperate to reach out to another person. But these seemingly fragile people are the strong people really.
I don’t have an audience in mind when I write. I’m writing mainly for myself. After a long devotion to playwriting I have a good inner ear. I know pretty well how a thing is going to sound on the stage, and how it will play. I write to satisfy this inner ear and its perceptions. That’s the audience I write for.
I believe the way to write a good play is to convince yourself it is easy to do – then go ahead and do it with ease. Don’t maul, don’t suffer, don’t groan – till the first draft is finished. Then Calvary – but not till then. Doubt – and be lost – until the first draft is finished. A Play is a Pheonix – it dies a thousand deaths. Usually at night – In the morning it springs up again from its ashes and crows like a happy rooster. It is never as bad as you think. It is never as goodas you think. It is somewhere in between and success or failure depends on which end of your emotional gamut concerning its value it approaches more closely. But it is much more likely to be good if you think it is wonderful while you are writing the first draft. An artist must believe in himself – Possibly not so passionately as Lawrence – but passionately. Your belief is contagious. Others say – He is vain – but they are affected.
