Of all the evils of war the greatest is the purely spiritual evil: the hatred, the injustice, the repudiation of truth, the artificial conflict.
Obviously one must hold oneself responsible for the evil impulses of one’s dreams. What else is one to do with them? Unless the content of the dream (rightly understood) is inspired by alien spirits, it is a part of my own being.[Selbstverständlich muß man sich für seine bösen Traumregungen verantwortlich halten. Was will man sonst mit ihnen machen? Wenn der – richtig verstandene – Trauminhalt nicht die Eingebung fremder Geister ist, so ist er ein Stück von meinem Wesen.]
Most men are not wicked. Men become bad and guilty because they speak and act without foreseeing the results of their words and their deeds. They are sleep-walkers, not evildoers.[Die meisten Menschen sind gar nicht böse. Die Menschen werden schlecht und schuldig dadurch, daß sie sprechen und handeln, ohne die Wirkung ihrer eigenen Worte und Taten sich vorzustellen. Es sind Traumwandler, nicht Bösewichte. ]
Life is composed of lights and shadows, and we would be untruthful, insincere, and saccharine if we tried to pretend there were no shadows. Most things are good, and they are the strongest things; but there are evil things too, and you are not doing a child a favor by trying to shield him from reality. The important thing is to teach a child that good can always triumph over evil.
It is not true that good can follow only from good and evil only from evil, but that often the opposite is true.[Es nicht wahr ist: daß aus Gutem nur Gutes, aus Bösem nur Böses kommen könne, sondern oft das Gegenteil.]
It is a mistake always to contemplate the good and ignore the evil, because by making people neglectful it lets in disaster. There is a dangerous optimism of ignorance and indifference.
I could not help feeling that they were evil things — mountains of madness whose farther slopes looked out over some accursed ultimate abyss.
Good and evil and beauty and ugliness are only ornamental fruits of perspective, whose sole value lies in their linkage to what chance made our fathers think and feel, and whose finer details are different for every race and culture.
From good to bad and rising from bad to good. For virtue gives birth to quiet, quiet to leisure, leisure to disorder, disorder to ruin; and similarly, from ruin, order is born; from order, virtue; and from virtue, glory and good fortune.[E così sempre da il bene si scende al male, e da il male si sale al bene. Perché la virtù partorisce quiete la quiete ozio, l’ozio disordine, il disordine rovina, e similmente dalla rovina nasce l’ordine, dall’ordine virtù, da questa gloria e buona fortuna.]
