Ayn Rand (born February 2, 1905, in St. Petersburg, Russia – died March 6, 1982, in New York City, U.S.), original name Alissa Zinovievna Rosenbaum, was a Russian-born American writer and philosopher, known for a philosophical system she named Objectivism.
Rand achieved fame with her novels, The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957), and their characters Howard Roark, John Galt, Dagny Taggart, and Hank Rearden. Her other notable works include novels We the Living (1936, revised 1959) and Ideal (written 1934, posthumously published 2015) and essays The Virtue of Selfishness (1964) and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal (1966, expanded 1967).
Established in 1985 by Ed Snider and Leonard Peikoff, Ayn Rand Institute continues to promote Rand’s legacy through her philosophy and works.
