We think of our emotions like they’re these unique, personal phenomena, that no one has ever felt what we have felt. There is a basis in science for every emotion we feel. Anger, love. As a scientist, I know there’s nothing magical about what makes us feel something for someone else. But then I see her smile. Man, that cannot be science.
When you’re angry, you’re just a character in someone else’s story. But when you let your anger go, you reclaim your own story. Become your own protagonist again.
We all need love and we all need nurture. There’s too much death and destruction. But friends who love you should warm you like the sun. Make you feel good about yourself. Not freeze you in their contempt and in their hate. Anger corrodes our belief that anything good can happen to us.[to Katie]
